Appropriateness in popular culture
Sometimes, we encounter situations in which a dominant culture adopts elements from the culture of a minority group. This practice, which is known as cultural appropriation, can lead to feelings of disrespect in minority groups. Many Black people view this as a patronizing behavior, whether it’s wearing a Native American headdress to a music festival or wearing blackface on Halloween.
A dominant group can incorporate elements of cultures that are minority. However, they can also use intellectual property of the minority group. This is done via blackfishing, as an example. It is important to keep in mind that people with colored skin have a history of being marginalized and deprived of rights. For instance, if you see a black person dressed in blackface for Halloween take into consideration the history of black people being excluded.
