Appropriateness in popular Culture
There are many instances where the dominant culture takes elements of the culture of a minority. This practice, referred to as cultural appropriation, may lead to disrespect from members of minority groups. It doesn’t matter if you wear the traditional Native American headdress at a music festival or wearing blackface for Halloween, a lot of Black people feel that it is a form of patronizing behavior.
In addition to adopting elements of cultures that are not native to the minority the dominant group may also use intellectual property from the minority group. This can be done by blackfishing, for example. It is important to remember that people of color have a long history of being disenfranchised and marginalized. For example, when you see a person of color wearing a blackface Halloween costume, you should consider the history of black people being marginalized.
